Overview

Bill’s Hot Dog Stand is a true emblem of Americana nestled in Washington, North Carolina, just steps from the riverfront. Since 1928, this unassuming hot dog restaurant has served up a distinctive regional specialty known as the "Carolina Red" hot dog—deep-fried to a unique texture and topped with mustard, onions, and a signature white chili that carries a subtle but memorable kick. Ordering it "all the way" is the local custom and the only way to fully appreciate its layered flavors.

The experience at Bill’s is rooted in tradition. With a small, no-frills counter and no indoor seating, it’s a place where patience is part of the ritual. Walls lined with newspaper clippings tell stories of decades past while friendly Southern charm lingers in the air, amplified by long-term staff who bring a sense of continuity and character to each visit. The tight space encourages a communal atmosphere, with benches outside offering a perfect spot to savor your hot dog while feeling the waterfront breeze.

This stand appeals to both locals and travelers drawn to authentic, nostalgic tastes tied to history and place. For regulars, it’s a decades-long love affair, a reliable stop for comfort food that’s as much about memory and story as it is about flavor. Newcomers often find themselves quickly converted by the withered burnt edges of the dog and the deep, flavorful chili—the combination making each bite something special. It’s not just food; it’s a lived experience, a slice of regional culture served on a bun.

Though compact in size and menu offerings, Bill’s Hot Dog Stand shines in its specialization. The famous hot dogs, fiery chili, crisp chips, and simple yet satisfying desserts like banana pudding evoke a vintage charm. Refreshing sodas in glass bottles complete the classic taste. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a curious first-timer, this spot invites you to slow down, immerse yourself in local flavor, and enjoy a hot dog that’s stood the test of time.

Bill's Hot Dog stand is an all American classic. They have been serving the same great hot dogs since 1928. 1 of the women behind the counter has worked here for over 50 years! The hot dogs are a style called 'Carolina Red' that has a destinct flavor and color. Really the only way to order them is 'all the way' : mustard, onions and a delicious white chili that has a bit of spice. They deep fry the dogs and put the condiments on the roll first and then the hot dog on top so it looks plain. For $2 it can't be beat. The southern charm is wonderful too. Bill's also has a food truck but I have only gotten them from their physical location. They are located right near downtown by the river front in Washington. Highly recommended!

This week was my first time eating here. I heard the locals ordering "*insert # of hotdogs you want* all the way, gimme the most burnt ya got." So when it was my turn, I stepped up to the counter and told the woman preparing the dogs, "2 all the way, gimme the most burnt ya got." I paid ($2.25 each, plus tax and tip), took my 2 dogs outside, sat on a bench to enjoy the breeze, and was treated to the 2 best hot dogs I have every experienced in my life. To all the locals who were in front of me in line and ordered, "*#ofhotdogs* all the way, the most burnt ya got," thank you for showing me the way. As the other reviews say, the white bean chili is a must!

Be ready to wait! The hot dogs were pretty good but the nostalgia of the 1928 hot dog restaurant and it's team made it worth the trip! Their white bean Chilli is a little hot Enjoy reading about the restaurant's history from newspaper clippings along the wall as you wait in line. It does move pretty fast for the number of people. Just know there are no tables! Hopefully you will be lucky enough to grab one of the benches out front!

We came all the way from CT and this was top of my husband's list of places he wanted to visit. He grew up here & remembers when the hot dogs sold for 50 cents! He always spoke of highly of them so I was excited to try them out. Well they are a little over $2 now but worth every penny The hot dog was hot & fresh and has a delicious flavor. The chili sauce was good imo, I liked that it had a little heat to it, but it wasn't overpowering. I'm glad I didn't read reviews until after I had one. People either love 'em or hate 'em I guess, so I might not have tried them based on Google reviews. I enjoyed them immensely tho. I'd say def give them a try. Worst case scenario you're not impressed, but at least cross it off your list & since its right by the water you'll at least enjoy the view!

I've been eating here for 40 years. People either hate it or love it. You don't come here for a plain hot dog. If you're not going to eat the chili don't even bother. I don't think it's as spicy as it was 20 or 30 years ago but they pretty much taste the same so, anytime I'm near Washington I have to stop and get some for the nostalgia. I'm not sure what they pay the workers but I feel like it's not enough considering how unhappy and unpleasant they have been for the last 40 years. Get your hot dog all the way extra chili.

The hot dogs have not changed in the 35 yrs since I had my first. Still the best. Got to get them all the way w chili mustard and onion. Service is slower than it used to be but worth every minute of the wait. They were $0.65 each when I had my first one.
